Ume Studio Edition: Nasturtium Plates

For Ume's last week, we couldn't let the color go quietly. So we made something special to send it off.

Each of these plates is hand-stenciled by our co-founder Abby, one piece at a time, so no two are exactly alike. The pattern isn't printed or painted on. It's stenciled in glaze and fired, and it came out looking uncannily like the shadow a real nasturtium casts across a table in the sun.

There's a story in how it happened. We set out to stencil a green pattern over Ume for a soft, watercolor look. Ceramics had other plans. The green came out softer and quieter than we planned, and the stems came out reading exactly like cast shadows. To design the stencils in the first place, Abby picked nasturtiums from the garden and held them up in the sun, traced the shadows they threw onto the patio, and built the pattern from those. So the shadow came first, and the kiln made it again on its own.

We're making 25 each of the dinner, appetizer, and morsel plates. When Ume closes, these close with it.

  • Hand-stenciled on our pale chartreuse Ume glaze. Each piece is one of a kind. Made to order in our Rhode Island studio, from first sketch to final firing.
